Material Bank – Flint, MI
2010 Thesis Design In a city devastated by the collapse of the US auto industry, a community building material reclamation center has the potential to be a positive catalyst. Providing remaining residents a with a depository for the fragments of abandoned houses, and a supply of materials for housing repairs, the material bank is a tool to help residents shape their neighborhoods. As an extension of the concept behind the local land bank, the material bank would provide space for the storage of the physical materials of the large number of abandoned properties. Instead of degrading in a state of neglect or inviting in scrappers and squatters, the materials become the potential for repairs. They are no longer the physical symbol of decay that many remaining residents see them as. |
