Guest House – State College, PA
2008 Student Work Located in the residential area surrounding a large research university, the winning design of a guest house for a local geologist used geology as inspiration at various scales. The client’s criteria for the guest house included space to display his collection. At the largest scale, the house is sited like a rock protruding from the hillside. The house’s southern half protrudes from the earth to receive sunlight, and contains the living space and the lofted bedroom. The other end of the house is submerged, containing the bathroom and utility space. At detail scale, individual rocks from the geologist’s collection can be displayed on one of the main interior walls. Adjustable display shelving with movable pegs in predrilled holes allows for a customized and variable display. |
